Many of Sir Stamford Raffles' initiatives were driven by strategy, duty, and purpose. From the moment he set foot on Singapore soil, Raffles negotiated with local rulers to secure British rights, established a trading port, conceptualised the Town Plan of 1822, founded the Botanic Gardens on Fort Canning Hill, and established Raffles Institution — donating 2,000 Spanish dollars toward its founding. These initiatives, among others, laid the foundation for Singapore's growth into the city it is today.
